Up Close And Personal With Former ELO 2 Star And Frontman Phil Bates

We’re thrilled to welcome Phil Bates to the Regal! Best known for his work with ELO Part II and The Orchestra, Phil brings decades of touring experience, global acclaim, and a deep connection to the legendary sound of ELO. From performing on the iconic 1978 Spaceship tour to collaborating with rock greats, Phil now takes the stage solo, blending his original music with blues, Beatles, and ELO classics. An unforgettable night of timeless hits awaits!

Full Biography:
Phil Bates connection with ELO began when his band Trickster signed with ELO's record label, Jet Records and being managed by the infamous Don Arden ( Father of Sharon Osbourne). The band featured as support band on ELO's ground-breaking and spectacular 1978 Spaceship world tour. When Jeff Lynne decided he no longer wanted to tour with ELO drummer Bev Bevan formed ELO Part 11. In 1993, Phil Bates joined ELO Part II, replacing Pete Haycock and Neil Lockwood. ELO Part II took the music of ELO around the world, often playing with symphony orchestras in large venues around the globe. Extensive touring in Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, US, Canada, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, South Africa, UK followed, until 1999. After leaving ELO Part II, Bates became a member of the Eleanor Rigby Experience for a short while along with Maartin Allcock of Fairport Convention fame and Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker along with Tina McBain, and Andy Bole The Eleanor Rigby Experience released one self titled CD and toured extensively in the UK. A short stint with The Bev Bevan Band and Bev Bevan's Move followed (2003/2005), along with the formation in the same year of German-based band ELB (Electric Light Band). In 2007, Bates rejoined his old mates from ELO Part II in The Orchestra (featuring members of ELO and Part II). In 2008, Phil Bates formed the Beatles, Blues and Blue Violin project (BBBV) with Mik Kaminski and Tina McBain, resulting in numerous successful UK tours and one self titled BBBV album released in 2010

The solo albums Naked and Agony & Ecstasy were released in 1996 and 1998, plus tours of the UK and Germany with Mik Kaminski Writing On The Wall CD was released in 1997. Also in 1996 a live album was recorded in Tamworth Castle A Little Light On An Electric Night featured Bev Bevan, Kelly Groucutt and Mik Kaminski. Two further solo albums, Alter Ego (2003) and One Sky (2005), followed. All were released on Bates's own labels, DPP, and latterly Essential Music. A compilation CD Retrospectiv, also on Essential, was released in 2007. Phil Bates gigged extensively with his "Tribute to ELO" throughout Europe as Phil Bates and Band. He has often appeared live on German, Swiss and Polish TV playing ELO songs. He played in a duo with former colleague Tina McBain for nearly twenty years playing venues all over the UK. These days in this country he plays as a solo artist playing songs from his own repertoire his set consists of his own compositions a little bit of blues a touch of Beatles and of course lots of those classic Jeff Lynne songs that made ELO one of the biggest and most successful bands in the world.

Definitely Mightbe - Oasis Tribute

Definitely Mightbe - Oasis Tribute

Now the longest established Oasis tribute in the world. Together for 18yrs and with over 2,000 shows under their belt, it’s easy to see why they are the most successful and admired Oasis show out there. With several tours on the prestigious o2 Academy circuit, appearances at huge open air festivals, continual tours across the UK and Ireland plus gigs all over Europe, the Middle East and even the Caribbean!

The backstage bust ups and slanging matches on Twitter proved too much for this great British band but DEFINITELY MIGHTBE don’t share the same sibling rivalry as the real thing. They do however have a lot in common when it comes to reproducing the rousing anthems, stage presence and atmosphere that the originals created. Playing a selection from all seven albums including the hit singles, live favourites and a couple of Noel’s acoustic numbers make this a great show to watch.

Lead singer Ian bears an uncanny resemblance to Liam and has worked as a look-a-like in the UK appearing on BBC1, Channel 4, Sky TV and ITV. Publicity campaigns and advertising for HMV, Virgin, Q Magazine, Loaded, Royal Bank Of Scotland, Lloyds Bank and the National Press. Ian was also asked to star in a video for heavy metal legends MOTORHEAD as Liam and also providing a voice over for a recent documentary accompanying the new Oasis-”Time Flies” DVD. To add to this, Ian has the knack of sounding like Liam too and was asked to provide the vocals on a dance remix of Wonderwall set for release in summer 2010.

Paul Mitchell takes up the reigns as Noel and mimics the riffs and lead breaks with such precision you’d think you were listening to the CD. A very loud CD. While the rhythm section of Kev Pyne on bass and Pete Coppard on drums keep everything locked together and completes the DEF MB family.

So, as good as the real thing? Well the legendary Alan McGee thought so when he recently introduced the band live on stage! So they…..DEFINITELY MIGHTBE.

King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys - 40th Anniversary Special

King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys, one of the world’s greatest jump, jive and swing bands, are preparing to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2026.

The rocking band launched in a milk bar in the Black Country town of Darlaston in 1986 and today still features original members King Pleasure (vocals and baritone saxophone) and Bullmoose ‘K’ Shirley (guitar).

Jim Simpson of Big Bear Music, who has managed the band from the beginning, explained how his team were now busily planning an “exciting year of celebrations”.

“They’ve recorded 14 albums, 11 with Big Bear Records, plus they’ve performed for 75 radio broadcasts and more than 70 TV appearances, including, somewhat bizarrely, five episodes of Teletubbies.

King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys have won many plaudits, but perhaps the most quoted is Paul Jones, original lead singer and harmonicist of rock band Manfred Mann, who described them on his BBC Radio 2 The Blues Show as “the hardest act to follow since the parting of The Red Sea”.

The band will be performing a series of special gigs in 2026, some featuring reunions with original band members. They will also headline the Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival next summer, for what will be the 15th time.

And to mark the 40th anniversary, Big Bear Records is also planning to re-issue Blues and Rythym Volume 1, an album where King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys perform a dozen songs with star guests. These include Americans Charles Brown, Gene ‘The Mighty Flea’ Conners and Howard McCrary, as well as Val Wiseman, considered by many to be the UK’s finest ever female jazz singer.

The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town

Written by Spike Milligan and Ronnie Barker.

Adapted by John Hewer. Directed by Rachael Hewer.

Something is rotten in Old London Town…

In Victorian England, a rotten, raspberry blower is claiming the lives of the upper-classes. The dark alleyways and moonlit graveyards of London are alive with the repetitive dins of the Phantom.

Inspector Corner of the Yard and his faithful sidekick, Sergeant Bowles, are fed up with these din-dins. The case is afoot. Will the Phantom be uncloaked? All will be revealed… particularly if the Phantom uncloaks himself.

Immortalised by The Two Ronnies, this Jack the Ripper parody is raspberry-jam-packed with Spike Milligan’s and Ronnie Barker’s love of surreal absurdism, clever puns, near-the-knuckle ribaldry, quick-fire jokes and famous wordplay.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary since its original broadcast in 1976, this newly adapted stage play brings the Phantom back to life like never before.

Starring Daniel Grooms, Callum Hale, John Hewer and Della Maylan.

Presented by Hambledon Productions with the kind permission of Spike Milligan Productions Ltd and Handles for Forks Ltd.

across Europe to Australia, Montreal and New Orleans. Now, they turn

inward, reconnecting with their roots for what promises to be their most

evocative and personal tour to date.

Steeped in stories of Ranagri - the farmland in rural Ireland from which the

band takes its name - their new album explores themes of migration,

identity, and the enduring search for the meaning of home. It is a work of

depth and resonance, shaped by lived experiences and a profound sense of

place.

Renowned for their commanding live performances, the band delivers a

sound that is both intricate and expansive. Soaring vocals, rich harmonies,

and driving rhythmic energy intertwine with masterful instrumentation -

flutes, whistles, harp, bodhrán, hammered dulcimer, percussion and guitars -

forming a virtuosic and immersive soundscape around lead singer Dónal

Rogers. The result is a musical experience that feels at once intimate,

powerful, and unmistakably anthemic.

‘A sound that’s completely new and immediately makes you want to dance’

Katie Derham, BBC Radio 3

‘A really serious proposition live, totally blown away’

LIVE THEATRE | Parody Of The Rings

A Hilarious and Epic Adventure!

What happens when a cinema's Lord of the Rings marathon goes terribly wrong?

At the local cinema, all hell breaks loose when the ushers misplace the DVDs of The Lord of the Rings trilogy – every single copy! With only the soundtracks left in hand, the team of hapless ushers must somehow improvise an entire three-film saga in front of a live audience. Get ready for an uproarious evening of comedy, chaos, and utter nonsense, as they attempt to recreate the epic tale of hobbits, elves, and orcs – without any visuals, any planning, or any clue what they're doing.

Will Frodo ever make it to Mordor? Will Aragorn get crowned king? Will Gollum stop stealing the show? Will anyone even remember who’s supposed to be who?!

It’s a show that’s more fun than a barrel of hobbits, and definitely more chaotic than a Gandalf speech. If you’ve ever wanted to see Gollum fight a battle with sound effects, or Gandalf desperately trying to remember what happens next, then you’re in for a hilarious treat!

Cara Dillon

Cara Dillon

Few voices linger in the soul quite like Cara’s; she remains a towering figure in Irish

music, consistently lauded as one of the folk genre’s finest interpreters on the global stage, earning widespread acclaim and countless awards—including the Meteor Award for Best Irish Female, four BBC Folk Awards (from nine nominations), and a Hot Press Award for Best Roots Act, to name a few.

For close to three decades, Dillon has occupied a singular space within folk music: an artist firmly rooted in tradition, yet never limited by it. Her voice—deceptively delicate, yet emotionally devastating—draws from something timeless and elemental. In a genre often weighed down by nostalgia or romanticism, Dillon offers something more enduring: truth carried in song—sung not to impress, but to endure. She continues to honour the rich cultural heritage of her native County Derry, with a commitment that’s both unflinching and deeply felt.

At the heart of her remarkable career is her husband and longtime collaborator, Sam Lakeman. As producer, composer, and performer, his influence has been pivotal in shaping Dillon’s sound, allowing the pair to cultivate a musical identity that defies typical pigeonholes—authentic, distinctive, and ever evolving. Their enduring partnership has ensured they have remained at the very pinnacle of the folk genre with a body of work that is both timeless and quietly innovative.

Audiences at their upcoming shows can expect an intimate, acoustic set, drawn from Dillon’s expansive discography, including their now-classic renditions of “Black Is the Colour” and “The Parting Glass,” alongside selections from 'Coming Home', her landmark 2024 release and first album in over six years.

Emerging from the vibrant traditional music scene of her teenage years with Óige and legendary band, De Dannan, and together in Equation, Dillon and Lakeman’s path wound through the major-label corridors of Warners and enviably hip indie label Rough Trade Records—a journey that mirrors the tension between preservation and reinvention that defines their work.

Her music has travelled far beyond folk’s usual borders— from Disney film soundtracks to chart-topping trance remixes. More recently, three of her songs were featured in the acclaimed TV comedy Derry Girls, and Coming Home was shortlisted for “Album of the Year” at the 2024 Northern Ireland Music Prize.

As Mojo magazine once wrote, Dillon possesses “quite possibly the world’s most beautiful female voice.” With Coming Home, she affirms that legacy—not simply as a singer, but as a storyteller of rare emotional depth. Her voice, as always, lingers long after the last note fades.

The Fureys

After 4 previous performances, THE FUREYS will play their last ever concert at the Regal as part of their FAREWELL TOUR on Thursday 30th April.

Legends of Irish music & song, The FUREYS renowned for their hit songs ‘I will love you’, ‘When you were sweet 16’, ‘The Green fields of France’, ‘The old man’, ‘Red rose café’, ‘From Clare to here’, ‘Her father didn’t like me anyway’, ‘Leaving Nancy’, ‘Steal away’ etc take to our stage for the final time as part of their FAREWELL TOUR.

The oldest of the brothers, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he met and shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty.

In 1972, Gerry Rafferty wrote ‘Her father didn’t like me anyway’ for Eddie. BBC Radio 1 presenter, the late John Peel made it his single of the year.

They are particularly proud of their UK chart success with songs such as I Will Love You and When You Were Sweet Sixteen, which in turn helped bring Irish folk and traditional music to a completely new audience. The band made their Top of the Pops debut in 1981.

Eddie Furey recalls how "many musicians have told us we influenced them after hearing a record from their parents or grandparents' collection". Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on the guitar while still a teenager. Eddie would return the compliment by joining Dave on stage in Paris for a jam during Dave’s wedding to Bananarama’s Siobhan Fahey.

Their emotive songs stir many emotions, tears and laughter, sadness and joy.

‘Daoirí Farrell is singlehandedly spearheading a resurgence of the authentic in Irish folk music…he is rightly in demand all over the world.’ Irish Music

‘The finest Irish male folk singer-storyteller this side of Christy Moore and Paul Brady.’ The Weekend Australian

A product of Dublin’s famous club An Góilin Traditional Singers, since launching his own solo live career at the 2016 Celtic Connections, Daoirí Farrell has gone from strength to strength. He can boast numerous honours from multiple BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards nominations to ALSR Celtic Music accolades.

He has also received endorsements from the likes of Christy Moore (‘Daoirí has assumed the mantle of Luke [Kelly]’), Mark Radcliffe (‘What a voice’) and Dónal Lunny (‘Daoirí is one of the most important traditional singers to emerge in the last decade’), with his music and live performances earning the acclaim of respected publications including MOJO, The Irish Post, Songlines and more.

On record

The debut album, ‘The First Turn’, surfaced back in 2009, with his breakthrough album appearing in 2016 with the powerful ‘True Born Irishman’, a set that Songlines called ‘an album that could yet prove to be one of the most significant Irish releases of recent years.’ It went on to win him two prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Following 2019’s ‘A Lifetime Of Happiness’, which earned three nominations in the RTE Radio 1 Folk Awards and FATEA’s ‘nothing less than a quintessential Irish folk album’ approval, Daoirí’s long-awaited fourth album, ‘The Wedding Above In Glencree’, released in late February 2023, which made the RTÉ Radio 2 playlist in Ireland, reached number 11 on the Official UK Folk Albums Chart and gained him a nomination for Folk Singer of the Year in Ireland’s RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards.

‘Accomplishment of the highest order’ ****RnR

Daoirí’s live work sees the 2013 All Ireland Champion Singer touring far and wide, performing regularly at festivals around the globe including in Canada, Australia and Europe. He has also toured the USA as vocalist for Lúnasa, performed in the UK in the line-up of the renowned Transatlantic Sessions and played to a live and TV audience at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

More recently, March 2020 saw him live stream from what he called ‘The Covid Corner’ of his kitchen in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day. It was followed by an additional twenty-five consecutive weekly online performances, attracting worldwide audiences with over 15,000 views each week and resulted in an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s flagship Today programme.

In 2024 he has toured in Ireland, UK, USA and Australia and played festivals and one off events including Celtic Connections (UK), Port Fairy Folk Festival (Australia), The Fundación Juan March (Spain) and The Luke Kelly Festival (Ireland).

George Boomsma | part of the Regal Folk Festival

George Boomsma is a singer-songwriter hailing from Northallerton, North Yorkshire. Known for his emotive vocals and soulful guitar playing, George has spent the last decade crafting a sound that blends both warmth and melancholy, captivating listeners across the UK and beyond.

His music weaves through themes of relationships, family, self-acceptance, grief, and navigating life’s many uncertainties. Over the years, George has shared the stage with celebrated artists like Richard Thompson, Scott Matthews and Katherine Priddy. His songs have found their way onto stations such as BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 Music and RTE Radio 1. He has also graced the stages of some of the most renowned folk festivals, including Cambridge Folk Festival in the UK and Port Fairy Folk Festival in Australia.

While George’s music may be subconsciously informed by the ridings of Yorkshire and the folk tradition so prevalent in the area, his songwriting comes from a deeply personal place. His rich vocals and confident lyrical style are reflected in his storytelling, while his guitar work often echoes Nick Drake in approach. With the addition of his live band, the folk-rock influence reminiscent of classic CSN and Stealers Wheel records is evident. Traditional folk signatures and themes run throughout George’s music, occasionally blending into country motifs , with the bed-rock pocket of rhythm and blues.

George is very much looking forward to bringing his band back to the Regal to celebrate his newest album!

Maddie Morris | part of the Regal Folk Festival

“Leading the next generation of socially conscious songwriters.” - Jim Moray

Maddie Morris is an artist who strives to make a difference in the world. Bold, insightful, and refreshingly unique, they take traditional song in new directions to shine a light on contemporary issues, offering new perspectives on the world we live in today.

Winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, Maddie has been described by Jim Moray as “leading the next generation of socially conscious songwriters.” Their music explores the way personal narratives in song can hold political importance. Folk songs have always told stories, but Maddie makes their mark by turning storytelling into action.

Recent collaborations include an artist residency at Ferens Art Gallery exploring trans re-telling of the Sirens myth, as well as commissions from Unlimited, Rural Arts, and the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

Maddie’s practice is rooted in the oral tradition: learning, sharing, and continuing folk legacies by listening, interpreting, and recreating. Their composition draws on tunes, melodies, and lyrics from British and Appalachian traditions, interwoven with their experiences as a trans, disabled person and stories gathered from communities they are part of. This meeting of tradition, personal identity, and community storytelling is at the heart of Maddie’s work—writing historically excluded voices and experiences into the canon so they’re valued and remembered.

Maddie released their debut album Skin to huge critical acclaim on the No Masters label. Skin was described by Tradfolk as “a folk fusion of personal tales, queer & feminist insights, and activism.” Passionately political yet gently understated, this is music that deftly treads the path between art and activism.

★★★★

"An insightful listen... Thrilling, glorious and inspiring." - Songlines

★★★★★

"Morris is a powerhouse performer with a rich voice and a gentle way with a guitar. Their lyrics are poignant and playful. Maddie is not shy about what they have to say – personal and political – but they celebrate, even as they mourn." - Folk London

“a folk fusion of personal tales, queer & feminist insights, and activism. A musical journey of voice and virtue.” - Tradfolk

“Skin is a musical journey into identity, activism and hope; the songs will resonate with anyone who’s felt marginalised for being who they are or made to feel uncomfortable in their own skin…while quietly understated, Maddie’s songs are no less potent in their vital messages.” - KLOF

“Morris is an unashamedly political singer-songwriter, their experiences informing some of the most life-affirming songs you are ever likely to hear..sung with a tenderness and honesty that immediately melts your heart.” - Bristol 24/7

“Skin is an album that extends beyond traditional folk music boundaries, a crafted narrative exploring identity, activism, and hope, aimed to both challenge and console listeners.” - Earmilk
